Descript Review
All-in-one video and podcast editing with AI transcription. Edit audio and video by editing text.
Our Review
Descript fundamentally reimagines audio and video editing. Instead of a traditional timeline, you edit by editing the transcript — delete words by deleting them from the text, rearrange sentences, and your audio/video changes automatically. After editing 30+ podcast episodes and 10+ videos, we found it 5x faster than traditional tools for spoken content. The AI-powered features (studio sound, filler word removal, eye contact) are genuinely impressive.
How to Use Descript
Getting Started with Descript
Download Descript from descript.com — the free tier includes 1 hour of transcription per month. Create your first project by recording audio, uploading a file, or importing a video. Descript automatically transcribes everything, and you'll see the transcript alongside your media.
Text-Based Editing
Descript's core feature is editing by editing text. Click on any word in the transcript to select that moment in the audio. Delete text to remove audio. Copy and paste paragraphs to rearrange sections. This is dramatically faster than traditional waveform editing for spoken content. The "Undo" function works normally, so there's no risk of accidentally deleting important content.
Studio Sound and Filler Word Removal
Toggle "Studio Sound" on any audio track to apply AI noise reduction — it transforms echoey, noisy recordings into clean, professional audio. The filler word removal feature detects "um," "uh," "like," and "you know" and removes them automatically with one click. These two features alone make Descript worth the subscription.
Overdub Feature
Overdub lets you clone your voice and type corrections. If you misspoke a word, highlight it and type the correction — Descript generates the corrected word in your own voice. Train Overdub by reading 10 minutes of provided text. The voice clone isn't perfect, but for minor corrections, it's indistinguishable from the original recording.
Publishing Workflow
When your project is complete, publish directly to YouTube, podcast platforms, or generate a shareable web link. Descript handles the export settings automatically. For video, export at 1080p (Pro plan) or 720p (free plan). For audio, export as MP3 or WAV.
